Ri for Ringo
letters

Remember This Chart?

If you’re a 90’s kid you probably do!  This is how I remember learning my A,B,C’s.  Each letter is made to look like an object which starts with that letter, I used to have the ‘lady lamp’ above my school locker (L for Lewis!) .  It’s a simple concept but we couldn’t find an example of this method used for learning Japanese.  Hai! Hiragana’s core rule set is based around this idea with each character made to look like a word which starts with that character.  So instead of A for Apple you get Ri for Ringo, with an image of Ringo Starr gazing longingly at a juicy apple to help you remember.  Did you know that Ringo Starr was in a funny Japanese TV advert! It’s true! So now you’ve made a fun link with the character and will always remember to think of Ringo Starr.
